Experience

Saweria joined VVGB in 2023 as a trade lawyer. She advises governments, exporting producers and industry associations on various aspects of international trade law and policy. Her expertise is in WTO law and EU trade remedies law.

At the WTO, Saweria represents Indonesia in EU – CVD/AD on SSCRFP (Indonesia) and China in EU – Definitive CVDs on BEVs (China). She has also represented international companies and governments in various trade defense proceedings, including cases such as New Battery Electric Vehicles for Passengers from China.

Before joining VVGB, Saweria was a dispute settlement lawyer at the Rules and Legal Affairs Divisions (LAD) of the WTO. In that capacity, she supported multiple panels adjudicating disputes arising from various WTO agreements, including all the trade remedies agreements and the GATT. She also supported the African Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition on WTO Law and the participation of South Pacific Island countries in the Competition.

Saweria has also offered consulting services in Africa. She has supported the accession of African LDCs to the WTO and to the regional economic blocs. She has also organised roundtables in West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa to understand concerns of African industry with regard to emerging carbon border measures on behalf of a philanthropic institution.

Saweria has taught international economic law and international environmental law at Riara University (Kenya). She has also coached numerous teams participating in international trade and international arbitration moot court competitions.

Saweria holds an LL.B. from Kenyatta University, an LL.M. in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO) from the University of Barcelona, and an LL.M. in Innovation, Technology and the Law from University of Edinburgh.

While pursuing her studies, Saweria’s team was awarded the Valerie Hughes award for the best respondent written submission at the Global Rounds of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (now the John H. Jackson Moot).

She is fluent in English and Swahili.

Saweria is a member of the Kenyan Bar.
